How to Read a Wind Diagram for North Sea Surfing

Wind direction, wind speed, and the angle of the coast decide whether a North Sea wave is rideable. Here is how to read a surf wind diagram without guessing.

Most surf apps show wind as an arrow with a number next to it. That is enough information to be useful and not enough information to make a decision. The wave you actually paddle into depends on where the wind is coming from relative to the coastline you are standing on, not where the wind is coming from on a global compass.

This is the part beginners spend a season figuring out. We want to make it faster.

What the Arrow Should Tell You

A wind arrow points in the direction the wind is going. A 270° wind is a westerly. It blows from west toward east. On a Belgian beach that faces roughly north-northwest, a westerly is slightly cross-shore from the left.

That is a different sentence than "the wind is 270 degrees at 18 knots." The same wind reads differently in De Panne, Oostende, and Knokke because the coast turns through several degrees between them.

A useful surf wind diagram shows three things at once:

  • The wind vector.
  • The coastline orientation at the spot you are looking at.
  • Whether the resulting angle is offshore, onshore, cross-shore, or somewhere between.

Without the coastline reference, the arrow is weather data. With it, the arrow becomes a surf decision.

Offshore, Onshore, Cross-Shore

The four common categories:

Offshore. Wind blows from land toward the sea. It holds the wave face up and grooms it. Light offshore is what surfers want. Strong offshore makes paddling and take-off harder and can blow spray back over the lip.

Onshore. Wind blows from the sea toward the land. It pushes the wave face forward and crumbles it before it can break cleanly. Most North Sea wind is onshore because most weather systems come off the Atlantic.

Cross-shore. Wind blows parallel to the beach. The wave face is neither held up nor pushed over. The result is choppy but often still rideable, especially at lower wind speeds.

Cross-onshore / cross-offshore. Diagonal versions of the above. These are the realistic categories on most days. Pure offshore is rare in this region.

A diagram that flattens these into one number — for example a "wind quality score" — is hiding the part you need.

Why North Sea Wind Is Hard

The North Sea is shallow, wide, and exposed to weather from the west. That combination produces:

  • Short-period wind swell rather than long-period groundswell.
  • Frequent onshore wind that arrives with the same low-pressure system that built the swell.
  • Quick changes in wind direction as fronts pass.

A long-period 1.2 m swell with light offshore wind is a different experience than a 1.2 m wind swell with 20 knots onshore. Both can show up as "1.2 m" in a generic forecast. The wind diagram is what tells them apart.

What to Check Before You Drive

A short pre-drive checklist for a North Sea session:

  1. Wind direction relative to your spot. Not relative to the compass. Relative to the beach you intend to surf.
  2. Wind speed in the next three hours. Conditions in this region change fast. A 10-knot offshore can become a 22-knot onshore inside an afternoon.
  3. Gust factor. Average wind tells you the trend. Gusts tell you whether the surface will be glassy or scratchy.
  4. Tide. Many North Sea spots only break on a specific part of the tide. Good wind on the wrong tide is still no wave.
  5. Swell period. Period below 6 seconds is wind swell. Period above 8 seconds is rare here and worth a drive.

If three of those five are wrong, the session is probably not worth the fuel.

Offshore reads cool. Onshore reads warm. Cross reads neutral. The number is still there. The interpretation is also there.

This is the recent rework. The previous version inherited a generic weather convention that flattered the forecast. The new version is honest about how the wind will feel in the water at that beach, not at a measuring station ten kilometres inland.

A surf forecast that hides the angle is a weather report wearing surf vocabulary. A surf forecast that shows the angle is closer to what a surfer would draw on the back of a napkin before driving to the coast.
