Tide Tables Do Not Explain Sandbar Surf

Knowing high and low tide is useful. Knowing how a specific sandbar reacts to that tide is the forecast problem.

A tide table tells you when the water goes up and down.

It does not tell you whether your break will work.

That distinction matters on the Belgian and Dutch coast, where surf depends heavily on sandbar shape, depth, and timing. High tide is not universally good. Low tide is not universally bad. Mid tide is not a compromise by default.

The sandbar decides.

Tide Is Not One Signal

Most surf forecasts treat tide as a phase label: low, mid, high, rising, falling.

That is a start, but it is too generic. The surf effect depends on how the changing water level interacts with the bottom at a specific break.

A shallow outer bank may block swell at low tide. A deeper channel may focus energy during a push. A high tide may soften a wave that was better an hour earlier. Two beaches a few kilometres apart can react differently to the same tide because their banks are not the same.

The table is identical. The surf is not.

Sandbars Move

North Sea banks are not static architecture. Storms move sand. Channels shift. A bank that held a good peak last autumn may flatten or migrate by spring.

That is why local surfers keep updating their mental model. They know the tide table, but they also know what the last storm did, how the current bank is shaped, and which part of the tide has been working recently.

Forecast products rarely capture that nuance. They show tide times and leave the interpretation to the surfer.

NORDR's direction is to make more of that interpretation explicit.

Why Tide Multiplies Other Factors

Tide does not act alone.

A weak swell on the right tide can be surprisingly rideable. A stronger swell on the wrong tide can disappear into whitewater or deep water. Offshore wind can polish the surface, but it cannot fix a bank that is not breaking. Period can help energy survive, but the local bottom still decides how it stands up.

That is why tide should be treated as a multiplier, not a side note.

The same offshore conditions can produce different scores across the tide cycle. A day-level rating hides that. A tide-aware forecast shows the window.

The Better Forecast Question

The question is not "when is high tide?"

The question is "which part of the tide gives this beach the best chance under this swell and wind?"

That is the question NORDR is built around. It uses tide as part of the nearshore interpretation, not as a decorative chart below the forecast.

The tide table is the starting point. Sandbar translation is the actual forecast problem.
