Designed for a Boat, Not a Desk

We've all been there. You're on the water, the sun is hammering down, and you need one piece of information from your phone. Tide turning in twenty minutes? Wind shifting northwest? Is that reading good or bad? You squint. You cup your hand over the screen. You tilt the phone at increasingly absurd angles. You give up and just guess.

This is the reality of using most apps outdoors. They were designed in air-conditioned offices, on calibrated monitors, by people sitting comfortably in ergonomic chairs. And they look gorgeous -- in those offices. Out in the field, they fall apart.

The office-app problem

Here's what happens when you take a typical app onto a boat, a beach, or a dive site:

Colour becomes meaningless. That subtle sage green indicating "good conditions"? Indistinguishable from the muted amber indicating "poor conditions" when the sun is washing out your screen. Red and green status dots? Gone. Pastel gradients on charts? You might as well be reading a blank page.

Touch targets shrink. Not literally, but effectively. Your fingers are wet, possibly cold, definitely not as precise as they are when you're sitting still at a desk. That neat little 32-pixel icon? Good luck hitting it on a bouncing deck. You'll tap the wrong thing three times before you land on the right one.

Visual noise becomes invisible noise. Subtle shadows, gentle blurs, delicate transparency effects -- all the things that make an app feel "premium" indoors become visual mud outdoors. Blur effects smear into the glare. Drop shadows vanish. That frosted-glass overlay? It's just a grey smudge now.

Every outdoor app user knows this. Hardly anyone building apps actually solves it.

What the field demands

We build three apps at Pelagic Labs -- Gilli for fishing, NORDR for surfing, and Aegir for diving. Different sports, different data, same fundamental problem: our users are outdoors, in demanding conditions, and they need information fast.

So we designed for the boat, not the desk.

When conditions get bright, our apps shift into a dedicated sunlight mode. It's not just "turn the brightness up." It's a fundamentally different visual approach, built from the ground up for readability in direct light.

Pure black on pure white. No greys, no mid-tones, no subtlety. When the sun is blasting your screen, you need maximum contrast. Every piece of text, every line on a chart, every border on a card snaps to solid black on a white background. It's not pretty in the way a designer's portfolio piece is pretty. It's readable. On a boat. At noon. In April. That's the point.

Thick borders replace gentle shadows. Indoors, a soft shadow elegantly separates a card from its background. Outdoors, that shadow is invisible. So in sunlight mode, borders go thick and solid -- unmistakable even through glare and spray on the screen.

Shape replaces colour. This is the one we're most proud of. Instead of relying on green for "good" and red for "bad" -- which are nearly identical in bright sunlight -- we use shapes. A checkmark means good. A triangle means caution. A strikethrough means no-go. You can read the status at a glance even if you're seeing the screen through polarised sunglasses, even if there's water droplets across the display, even if the sun is directly behind you turning the whole screen into a mirror. Shapes survive where colours don't.

Touch targets get bigger. Every button, every toggle, every interactive element grows to a size that accounts for wet hands, cold fingers, and a platform that won't stay still. You shouldn't need surgical precision to check the tide.

Zero blur, zero transparency. All those lovely frosted-glass effects that look so elegant on a designer's Dribbble post? Gone. In sunlight mode, every element is solid, opaque, and unambiguous. Nothing competes with the glare. Nothing smears.

Designed with the conditions, not against them

The interesting thing about designing for extreme readability is that it forces a kind of honesty. You can't hide behind visual polish. Every element on screen has to earn its place. If a piece of information isn't important enough to be readable on a bouncing boat in bright sun, maybe it shouldn't be on the screen at all.

This thinking bleeds back into every mode of our apps. Even indoors, even in dark mode, the same discipline applies: information first, decoration never. Data earns screen space. Chrome doesn't.

Whether you're checking solunar tables in Gilli while drifting over a reef, scanning swell data in NORDR from a windy car park, or reviewing dive conditions in Aegir before rolling off the boat, the experience is the same: you look at the screen, you get the information, you get back to what you're doing. No squinting. No guessing. No cupping your hand over the display like you're shielding a candle.
