Right now, while you're rigging your rod or loading the car, Gilli is quietly pulling together satellite ocean colour data, tidal measurements, atmospheric pressure readings, water temperature logs, lunar phase calculations, wind models, and more. It's cross-referencing information from oceanographic agencies, national weather services, hydrological institutes, and satellite monitoring networks -- organisations that most anglers have never heard of and would never think to check.

You see a single, clean prediction. Under the surface, there's an enormous amount of homework.

The manual alternative

Imagine trying to do this yourself. Seriously, try.

You'd need to check one website for tide times. Another for barometric pressure trends -- not just the current reading, but the trajectory over the past six hours, because fish respond to the change, not the number. A third source for water temperature, assuming anyone is measuring it near your spot. A fourth for wind speed, direction, and gust forecasts. A fifth for cloud cover and light penetration. Then the moon -- not just the phase, but the rise and set times relative to sunrise and sunset, because that alignment is what solunar theory says matters.

That's six sources and you haven't even started on water clarity, current patterns, seasonal migration data, or historical catch correlations.

Each of those sources uses different units. Some report in Celsius, others Fahrenheit. Some give wind in knots, others in metres per second, others in kilometres per hour. Some update every hour, some every six hours, some once a day. Some are straightforward dashboards. Others are dense scientific portals built for researchers, not anglers -- the kind where you need to know what "sea surface temperature anomaly relative to the 30-year climatological mean" actually means before you can find out if the water is warm today.

Now imagine doing this every time you want to go fishing. On your phone. With wet hands.

Nobody does this. And that's the point.

What we actually pull together

Gilli's intelligence layer draws from over twenty distinct data streams, each covering a different piece of the environmental puzzle. Broadly, they fall into a few categories:

Satellite-derived ocean and lake data. Surface temperature, water colour, chlorophyll concentration, turbidity. These come from Earth observation networks that scan coastlines and inland water bodies on regular cycles. The resolution varies -- some measure in the hundreds of metres, some in the tens -- but the combined picture gives us a remarkably detailed snapshot of what's happening in the water right now.

Tidal and current measurements. Tide heights, tidal coefficients, current speed and direction from coastal monitoring stations. Not just "high tide at 14:32" but the full tidal curve -- the rate of rise and fall, the difference between springs and neaps, the windows where tidal flow creates the feeding opportunities fish actually respond to.

Atmospheric readings. Barometric pressure and its rate of change. Wind speed, direction, and gust intensity from weather observation networks. Cloud cover and precipitation forecasts. Air temperature and humidity. Each one matters. Together, they paint a picture of whether conditions are stable, improving, or about to fall apart.

Water quality and temperature sensors. In-situ measurements from monitoring buoys, river gauges, and coastal stations. These ground-truth the satellite data. A satellite can estimate surface temperature from orbit, but a buoy sitting in the water gives you the actual number -- and sometimes those numbers disagree, which is itself useful information.

Astronomical calculations. Sun and moon positions, rise and set times, moon phase and illumination percentage. The solunar theory -- that fish feed more actively during certain lunar alignments -- has been debated for decades, and the evidence is still mixed. So we calculate the astronomy properly, down to the minute, for your exact location, and let it sit alongside the signals with firmer evidence behind them.

Historical and seasonal baselines. Long-term averages for temperature, pressure, and conditions allow us to spot when today is unusually warm, unusually still, or unusually anything. Fish don't just respond to absolute values. They respond to deviations from the norm. A 14-degree water temperature in March means something very different from 14 degrees in August.

Why breadth matters more than any single source

Any single data point can mislead you. The tide might be perfect, but if a pressure front just collapsed, the fish aren't biting. The moon phase might be ideal, but if the water temperature dropped three degrees overnight, that matters more. Wind might be calm, but turbidity from yesterday's storm could have shut things down.

The value isn't in any one source. It's in the cross-reference. It's in knowing that the tide is running, the pressure is stable, the water warmed half a degree since yesterday, the wind is pushing bait into the eastern shore, the moon is in a major feeding window, and the turbidity has cleared since Tuesday. No single website tells you all of that. No angler has time to assemble it manually. But the combination is what separates a great session from a wasted morning.

We're deliberately vague about exactly which agencies and networks we pull from. That's intentional. The specific combination of sources, the way we weight them, the models we use to reconcile conflicting data -- that's years of research and testing. It's the thing that makes our predictions actually useful rather than just decorative.

What we will say is this: we go deep. Deeper than any single app, any single website, any single agency. We pull from sources that serve marine researchers, commercial fisheries, climate scientists, and naval operations. We reconcile data that was never designed to be reconciled.
