Why Your Fishing App Doesn't Know When Fish Actually Bite
Your app says 'great fishing today' every day. That should tell you something. Most fishing predictions use weather and moon phase. That's not how fish biology works.

Open any mainstream fishing app right now. Check the forecast. It'll show you a solunar chart, a barometric pressure reading, maybe a moon phase icon. It'll rate today as "good" or "excellent." Tomorrow will also be "good" or "excellent." In fact, nearly every day is good or excellent, because the system has no real reason to tell you otherwise.
This is not a prediction. It's a horoscope.
The Weather-Plus-Moon Problem
Most fishing forecasts are built on two inputs: weather conditions and lunar cycles. The logic goes something like this -- if the pressure is stable, the wind is manageable, and the moon is in a favourable phase, fish should be biting.
It sounds reasonable. It's also how people thought about fishing in the 1930s.
The solunar theory was published in 1926. It suggested that the gravitational pull of the moon and sun creates feeding windows. Nearly a century later, fishing apps are still running the same playbook, just with nicer graphics. They've added weather data on top, which helps with human comfort but tells you surprisingly little about whether a perch is going to eat your lure at 7am on a Tuesday in April.
The problem isn't that weather and moon are irrelevant. They're not. The problem is that they're the only inputs -- and they barely scratch the surface of what actually drives fish to feed.
Fish Don't Check the Barometer
Here's what's actually happening underwater when a fish decides to eat.
Its metabolism is governed by water temperature. Not air temperature -- water temperature. A pike in 4-degree water is a fundamentally different animal from a pike in 16-degree water. Its digestion slows, its energy budget shrinks, and its willingness to chase prey drops off a cliff. The relationship between temperature and metabolic rate is not linear, not simple, and not the same across species. A trout and a carp sitting in the same lake at the same temperature are operating on completely different biological clocks.
Then there's oxygen. Dissolved oxygen in the water column determines where fish can physically survive, not just where they prefer to be. In summer, a lake can stratify into layers -- warm on top, cold on the bottom, with a narrow band in the middle where the oxygen is actually breathable. Fish don't choose this zone. They're trapped in it. If your forecast doesn't know where that band is, it doesn't know where the fish are.
And then there's light. Not "sunny or cloudy" -- actual light penetration into the water. How deep does useful light reach? That depends on water clarity, angle of the sun, surface conditions, and the time of year. Predatory fish that hunt by sight behave differently at different light levels. Some species feed aggressively in low light. Others shut down entirely. The colour of your lure, the depth you fish it, the time of day it works -- all of this connects back to how light moves through water, not whether there's a cloud icon on your weather widget.
The Prediction Nobody Wants to Make
Here's the uncomfortable truth about fishing forecasts: a genuinely accurate one would often tell you to stay home.
Not every day is good fishing. Some days, the biological conditions are genuinely poor. The water is too cold for the species you're targeting. The oxygen is compressed into a narrow band at an awkward depth. The light conditions favour the fish, not the angler. On those days, an honest forecast would say: "Today is a two out of ten. If you go, fish deep, fish slow, and lower your expectations."
No app wants to say that. It's bad for engagement. It's bad for daily active users. It's bad for the metrics that keep investors happy. So instead, every day gets a cheerful rating, and anglers keep showing up to dead water wondering what they're doing wrong.
The answer is nothing. The forecast lied.
What a Real Prediction Looks Like
A prediction that actually means something has to model the fish, not just the sky.
It needs to understand how temperature affects metabolism for the specific species you're chasing -- not a generic "cold-blooded animal" approximation, but the actual biological response curve for that fish. It needs to know what's happening in the water column, not just on the surface. It needs to account for how light behaves at depth, how clarity changes the game, and how all of these factors interact with each other in ways that aren't obvious from a weather report.
When you build a forecast on biology instead of folklore, something interesting happens: the predictions start to disagree with each other. Tuesday is excellent. Wednesday is poor. Thursday morning has a ninety-minute window that's worth setting an alarm for, and then it's over. The forecast becomes specific, opinionated, and occasionally inconvenient.
That's what a real prediction looks like. It doesn't flatter you. It tells you the truth.
